Take a horizontal surface . . . any horizontal surface. . . a bookshelf, the top of your dresser, the back of the toilet tank, or even (gulp) the top of the refrigerator. See all of the STUFF that has sat there so long you no longer even notice it? (Technically this is called “House Blindness” - when you no longer see what needs to be done to your house.) Remember this simple rule of thumb:

No more than three items on any horizontal surface.

That’s it, just three. Difficult? Sure. Impossible? No, and you won’t believe the difference it will make until you try it. Remember we are shooting for that Better Homes and Gardens magazine look where buyers will questions if anyone really lives in the house.

In the first picture, what is your eye drawn to? You normally notice the photos first. Since these photos are your personal possessions and aren’t staying with the house, we want the fireplace to be the focal point instead.
